The Legend of Freediving.
Stathis Georgios Hatzis, from Symi (1878 - 1936), was the leading "naked diver" (ie without a diving suit) and sponger of the Greek sponger fleet of Symi in the period 1900 - 1930, who became famous because of his legendary abilities in free diving, as it is called the diving without breath today.
During the period of the Italian rule in the Dodecanese, on July 16, 1913, Stathis Hatzis, doing a series of free diving for many hours up to a depth of 88 meters, with his campanellopetra, as they called it in Symi, the marble he used for weight in diving, locate on the seabed and then tied the lost anchor of the Italian battleship "Regina Margherita", in Pigadia, Karpathos, which was at a depth of 77 meters. During his three days of diving, Stathis made at least 16 dives and recorded depths greater than 50 meters, while was needed to go down to 88 meters as he said.
He explained that he collected sponges up to 100 meters, while at 30 meters he could stay for 7 minutes collecting sponges from the bottom.
The description of its incredible feats by the Italian fleet remained an incredible legend for decades, although these were confirmed at the end of the 20th century.
